The septuagenarian Pelican of London docks in Vigo and can be visited

Crossing oceans since 1948, the Pelican of London crossed this time the Atlantic waters to go to the Port of Vigo, where it has docked this morning around 12 o'clock.

The ship will open its doors to the public on the 23rd and 24th, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. And continuing our custom of trying to make the nautical world accessible to all, we have managed to make it free of charge.

Crossing oceans since 1948, the Pelican of London crossed this time the Atlantic waters to go to the Port of Vigo, where it has docked this morning around 12 o'clock.

As always, we wanted you to be the ones who could feel you, even if only for a while, sailors from one of the best sailboats of the 20th century.

The ship will open its doors to the public on the 23rd and 24th, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. And continuing our custom of trying to make the nautical world accessible to all, we have managed to make it free of charge.

The Pelican of London has been designed to be used as a school ship. However, its range of activities has not stopped growing; and now, 70 years later, participates in some of the most important regattas and sailing events in the world, organizes conferences and seminars, publishes brochures and books, is dedicated to international research and promotes sailing training among the youngest .

So the sailboat has always wanted to maintain and enhance the objective for which it was created, forming today 32 young people without taking into account their age or experience, and giving them the opportunity to travel around the world while living in its own flesh the sea and all that this entails.

We encourage you to come to the port tomorrow and last and do not miss the opportunity to know the charms that the Pelican of London has been hosting for 7 decades.

And it is that the ship has everything necessary so that these can move with total normality, and what is still better, participate in the navigation and activities of the ship.

The Tenacious is equipped with elevators, signs in Braille, security measures that guarantee the stability of wheelchairs, adapted bathrooms and cabins, sound scoreboard of the course and even a rudder that guarantees to be navigated by anyone thanks to its lever that allows rule it with just one finger.

It usually takes about 20 people with physical or mental disabilities on board, but the fact that this trip is so long, reduces the number of the current crew.

After touring the world and navigating the waters of Panama, Australia and New Zealand among others for the past three years, the big sailing vessel plans to return to the UK this summer.

In the Traslatio Foundation we want to give visibility to this type of boats, so together with the Port of Vigo, we have managed to get the sailboat open her doors to the public also this afternoon, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, free of charge; so we recommend to all those who find you in the olive city that you come to know a little more about the great history that surrounds the Tenacious.

The Vatican formally supports the Traslatio Foundation project

In order to know the answer of the Vatican on the project “Route Traslatio 2021”, this morning took place the meeting between Bishop D. Luis Quinteiro, Celso González and Mario Cardama -director and president of the Foundation-.

In order to know the answer of the Vatican on the project “Route Traslatio 2021”, this morning took place the meeting between Bishop D. Luis Quinteiro, Celso González and Mario Cardama -director and president of the Foundation-.

The fact that the project counted on the support of the Church was fundamental, since the Route is aimed at recreating the Traslatio of the remains of Saint James the Apostle to Compostela hundreds of years ago.

Traslatio Foundation also works to make it a cultural event. The Tall Ship´s largest maritime route ever organized. Through it, young people from different countries will participate in an unforgettable experience in which in addition to training on maritime culture, they will be able to visit some of the ports of the countries visited in the Traslatio, such as Genoa, Sète, Porto or Vigo.

The procedures with the ecclesiastical sector began some time ago, counting from the very beginning with the support of D. Luis, Bishop of Tui-Vigo and also the Spanish Episcopal Conference Promoter of the Apostleship of the Sea - dedicated to the seamen and their families-.

He put all the necessary means to get the initiative to the Holy See. To do this, he contacted one of the FAO representatives in the Vatican and, after having arranged a meeting with him and the Foundation's management, they both managed to present the project to the Dicastery for the Integral Human Development Service.

With the positive answer of the Dicastery, Bishop D. Luís delivered today to the president of the Foundation the letter by which the Vatican formally shows its support for the Route Traslatio 2021.

The third largest school ship in the world in the port of Vigo

Almost seven years after its last visit, on 16th March, the third largest school ship in the world, the great Kruzenshtern, will return to Vigo harbor, thanks to the work of the Traslatio Foundation, one of whose objectives is making Vigo a must-attend stopover for large sailboats, given its excellent geographical location, the safety of the estuary, and the good location of the port in the center of the city, which makes it easier for all those who wish to admire and visit a part of the history of navigation.

Being the last of a series of four fast sailing boats destined to dangerous and long journeys crossing the South Atlantic, it is the only one of these who continues sailing after ninety two years in operation; two of the others were turned into floating museums -in New York and Germany-, and the third one had a much more fateful ending, after sinking in the Atlantic Ocean dozens of years ago.

The fact is that the famous ship went through many and very diverse functions that make up its great history. Starting from its beginnings covering the wheat race in the line of Australia, and happening to be delivered to the USSR in compensation for the damages of war only twenty years later; the sailboat continued its long life as a school ship for its future officers of the fishing fleet of the USSR, to later become part of the fleet of the National Academy of Fisheries of the Baltic.

During its last years, the ship served as a stage for the filming of several films and documentaries; it went around the world in commemoration of the trip made by the explorer who gives it its name and to whom it pays homage; it left his mark on numerous scales around the world and currently serves as a school ship for the Russian Navy.

The city of Vigo is lucky to have the ship for a couple of days again. The school ship already docked in its waters in 1998 participating in the Cutty Sark Regatta; in 2009, on the occasion of the departure of the Tall Ships Atlantic Challenge; and in 2011, making a stop in one of his trainign trips. Without a doubt, its origin, construction and history make the Kruzenshtern a sailboat that leaves no one indifferent; and from the 17th to the 18th of March, a fantastic opportunity for all those Galicians who want to get closer and enjoy its beauty.

The ship Kruzenshtern during its last visit to Vigo, in 2011
